The V.O. Famous Fishtank

Since opening our new location in 2016, we have had the pleasure of having a beautiful saltwater tank in our waiting room. While you're waiting for your exam scroll through the webpage and see if you can spot all the fish!

Our Fish!

Dory

BLUE TANG

Dory is well known and loved. Blue tang fish eat algae and help keep our tank clean! Their eyes are located high on their heads, allowing for a wide, elevated view of their surroundings while they graze on algae. Dory has been at home in our office for 10 years. You might noticed Dory swimming up and down the tank, this is just what she does when she is bored and waiting for food!!

Soleil

SAIL FIN TANG

Soleil has fins that can double his body height when raised, especially when threatened. Soleil will often change colours, you might even notice the change in the time before your eye exam. This is due to territorial disputes, he darkens his stripes to blend in and highlight yellow dots on his face. Soleil is very observant and will come to the front of the tank at feeding time showing curiosity, suggesting excellent visual memory!

Retina

ELECTRIC BLUE HERMIT CRAB

If you're having a hard time finding him, even with your reading glasses on, it may be because he is asleep! He is most active at night, foraging for food and climbing rocks, but sometimes you can spot him wandering around the tank. Coming for a follow up? You might notice Retina looks a little different than last time around, he is always on the hunt for a new shell. If there isn’t a vacant shell he’ll even go as far as stealing one from one of the friendly snails in the tank. His job in the tank is to help control algae!!

Chalazion

FILEFISH

Chalazion is often spotted floating vertically to mimic seagrass or coral whips. They swim using their dorsal and anal fins, giving them a slow moving appearance. Filefish can quickly change their color and pattern to blend into their surroundings, can you spot the file fish? Does his name sound familiar? A chalazion is a lump on the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. These oil glands, when functioning incorrectly cause dry eye, to learn more about dry eye click below!

The Conjunctiva Duo

PAJAMA CARDINAL

Despite their name, these fish don’t have pink eye! They are nocturnal, they spend the day hiding in coral reefs or sea urchin spines and become active at night to feed. Unlike many fast-moving reef fish, they tend to hover in place, making them very photogenic. Feel free to snap some photos of these peaceful fish!! Noticing some changes in their pattern? Don’t jump to colourblind conclusions, their purple-red spots can fade or even disappear during the evening.

Nemo and Marlin

PERCULA CLOWNFISH

Nemo and Marlin. Well known and loved, unlike most fish that swim with a streamlined, flowing motion, Percula clownfish are known for a distinct "rowing" motion using their pectoral fins, appearing almost clumsy. You’ll see Nemo and Marling darting in and out of the coral and anemone; a special layer of mucus on their skin makes them immune to the venomous stings of their host anemone

Darla

LYRETAIL ANTHIAS

While they swim in open water, they are incredibly fast and will dive into coral branches for safety when threatened. Considered peaceful, reef-safe fish ideal for the community tank she is in. They are known for their bright red, orange, and yellow colors. She is known in the fish world as a hardy fish! She will live for up to 8 years.

Lunette

FIRE FISH

Lunette is a small, vibrant, and peaceful fish. You can spot her yellow head, white body, and fiery red-orange tail. You may notice something sticking up from her head, this is called a flag fin and is Lunette’s way of communicating with the other fish in the tank. Can’t spot her? She likes to hide in the aquarium rocks. This is very common for fire fish due to their shy nature, especially when new, stressed, or if tank mates are aggressive.

Fluorescein

YELLOWTAIL DEMOISELLE

These little fish might look similarly to our Dory fish but they are at their full size! While they are generally considered peaceful for a damselfish, they are not shy. If you put your hand in their tank, they may nip at you to protect their territory! They normally grow to approx. 2-3 inches and can live up to 15 years in captivity

The Tiffanys

BLUE-GREEN CHROMIS

We have 3 of these fish in our tank, it's hard to tell these three apart so we lovingly named them all Tiffany. Tiffany is a highly social fish and forms dense, shimmering schools in the wild to confuse predators. You will notice these fish, similar to the tiffany frames, are blinged out!! Browse our frame selection online by hitting the icon below! Their scales are specialized with an iridescent overlay that acts like a mirror, reflecting light in a mesmerizing way to create a glitter-like shimmer in reef tanks.

Spot

STRAWBERRY DOTTYBACK

Spot is often found hovering just inside a rock cave or crevice, scanning for food. He is incredibly hardy, resilient, and adaptable. He feeds on small, undesirable creatures like bristle worms, little worms that hide in the rocks and coral with very spiky outsides. Spot is a very bright fuchsia shade, being solid colour is somewhat rare for coral fish! Spot is a carnivore with a high metabolism, he eats brine shrimp, and pellets. If you would like, we would love to give the fish some pellets so you can witness Spot in action!
