Contact Lens Exams

Contact lenses are medical devices that sit directly on your eyes. Regular evaluations are crucial to prevent complications, ensure your lenses fit properly, and monitor for changes in your eye health.

Senior Exams

Your vision changes with time. This is why regular exams are crucial for preserving healthy vision in your senior years. Loss of contrast sensitivity is subtle; you may have vision changes that might not be obvious. Optometrists can identify other health problems such as diabetes or stroke through eye exams.

Pediatric Exams

Vision plays an essential role in many aspects of a child’s development, and prioritizing an eye exam can help identify issues before they impact a school year or day-to-day activity. Our optical department offers 2 for 1 pricing for kid's lenses, and with our newest addition to our equipment, the MYAH all-in-one optical biometer and corneal topographer we can manage myopia like never before!

Adult Exams

Optometrists assist in identifying health conditions that are often first detected through a comprehensive eye exam, provide referrals to specialists and manage post-eye-surgery health. During an exam, your case history, quality of vision, external and internal health of your eyes, ability of the eyes to adjust focus, eye movement, eye coordination, and peripheral vision will all be evaluated. If a problem is detected, treatment and management options will be provided!

Vernon-Made, Sustainably Powered Lenses

Largest Frame Selection in the North Okanagan

Frames suitable for all price ranges

Most eyewear lenses sold in the Okanagan are shipped in from labs in Toronto, Vancouver, or overseas. Ours aren't. Every lens we surface is made right here in Vernon, at Independent Lenses — our own in-house digital surfacing lab. Our building runs on genuinely green infrastructure: a 100-panel, 38.5kW solar array on the roof (with expansion already planned), and a geothermal system running under the entire site — including the parking lot and the building itself. That geothermal system doesn't just heat and cool the building; the hydronic loops directly interface with our lens-manufacturing equipment, including cooling for our alloy blockers, chillers for our polishing equipment, and cryochilling for the vacuum-deposition chambers used to apply anti-reflective coatings — a genuinely first-of-its-kind setup. When you choose Vernon Optometry, your lenses aren't just precision-made — they're made locally, sustainably, and by people you can actually meet.

Carbon Neutral
Facility

We have 100 solar panels on our roof that in June 2021 had already saved over 24,000 kg of CO2 emissions or the equivalent of 719 trees. We have installed a live monitoring station that allows us to track our solar production in real time and notifies us when our panels are delivering energy back to the grid. Our building is also outfitted with Geothermal heating loops that provide the vast majority of our heating and cooling energy needs for the building. These loops have been connected to our lens manufacturing equipment in order to recapture the heat produced during the manufacturing process. In other words... when we are making lenses, we are heating our building.

Ocular Coherence Tomograph
(OCT)

OCT is a noninvasive imaging device that is the clinical standard used for early detection, diagnosis and management of ocular health conditions such as Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. OCT produces cross-sectional images of your eye. It works by measuring wavelengths of infrared light that reflect off the back of your retina and optic nerve. As well as measuring each layer of your eye’s thickness so optometrists can detect and track the progression of diseases. This technology also helps our Doctors triage emergencies and expedite referrals.

MYAH Optical Biometer + Corneal Topographer

The MYAH offers an efficient, and repeatable way to baseline axial length and monitor change over time. The MYAH features optical biometry, corneal topography, pupillometry, anterior cornea wavefront analysis, and is a fantastic contact lens fitting tool. The MYAH allows our Doctors to evaluate the corneal surface, assess visual quality, and fit specialty lenses. The analysis tools plot changes in axial length, refraction, and corneal power; highlight differences in corneal shape between visits; and map higher-order aberrations. We accept out of office referrals for these scans, call our office to inquire!

I-CARE Tonometer

Don't like the puff? No problem. Ask us to use the I-Care tonometer to measure intraocular pressure. It's a fast, painless and reliable way to measure eye pressure. We love it and we think you'll love it too.

Daytona Optomap

Daytona produces a 200° single capture optomap retinal image. This fast, easy, ultra-widefield imaging technology was designed for healthy eye screening allowing our Doctors to assess retinal health, allowing our Doctors to reduce the need for traditional pupil-dilating drops . The Daytona uses special technology to capture retinal images as if it were taking them from inside the eye.
Optikam tool and I pad used for measuring lenses

OPTIKAM - the modern way to fit lenses

The Optikam is a tool that optimizes every stage of the eyewear fitting process by capturing digitally enhanced measurements that are used to customize the lens.  Optikam's eyewear measurements take into account how the frame will be worn by the patient once dispensed. These personalized “as-worn” measurements allow lens designs to be customized.
